“You can be passionate about anything.” ~Jerry Seinfeld
Seinfeld’s TV show about nothing earned $2.7 billion in 12 years and is still raking in millions in syndication payments.
Jerry’s success was not a fluke. The secret of his success was his ability to consistently create awesome content that people loved.
Here are some insights from Seinfeld about his creative process that can help you produce quality content consistently like Jerry did for years and continues to do today.
1. Writer’s Block is a Sham
Jerry calls BS on writers block:
“Writer’s block is a phony, made up, BS excuse for not doing your work.”
I’ve got to say I agree with him on this one and I also find that exercise like running is a great way to sharpen the mind and help you kick writer’s block to the curb.
2. Run With the Critics
Enthusiasm is contagious and it’s important to maintain momentum towards your social media goals.
When commenting on the chemistry of Seinfeld’s cast Jerry noted just how vital it was to the show’s success that everyone believed they were funny together:
“Very early on in my career, I hit upon this idea of being the Heckle Therapist…Instead of fighting them, I would say ‘You seem so upset, and I know that’s not what you wanted to have happen tonight. Let’s talk about your problem” and the audience would find it funny and it would really discombobulate the heckler too, because I wouldn’t go against them, I would take their side.'”
3. Find Motivation Beyond Money
Jerry has an estimated net worth of $750 – 800 Million dollars and continues to consistently produce awesome content for his hilarious web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
Seinfeld would not keep producing if he wasn’t passionate about comedy.
So the takeaway here is to find your passion because you will need to really produce if you want to make your mark in the marketplace.
Jerry’s passion not only lead him to a hugely successful show he is still crushing it with comedy and was just featured as the first stand-up comedian on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Jerry crushed it.
4. Your Dream Job Is Still a Job
Although social media can be fun it’s important to remember that you have to work social media if you want it to work for you.
Hammer your social networks by updating them daily to keep the awareness of your brand strong.
This is not unlike how like Jerry updates his comedy by writing out jokes every single day to keep his comedy strong.
5. Consistency Leads to Mastery
Seinfeld writes jokes every day and has done this for many years. The consistent effort he puts in is what has sharpened his skills and made him a master comedian.
Isaac caught Seinfeld backstage and asked if he had “any tips for a young comic.”Brad Isaac is a young comedian who found himself in a club where Jerry Seinfeld was performing.
Here’s how Isaac described his interaction with Seinfeld…
He said the way to be a better comic was to create better jokes and the way to create better jokes was to write every day.
He told me to get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. The next step was to get a big red magic marker.
He said for each day that I do my task of writing, I get to put a big red X over that day.
“After a few days you’ll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You’ll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job is to not break the chain.”
So take Jerry’s advice to stay consistent and apply it to your social media success.
My recommendation is for you to publish content and create new connections every day if you want to grow your brand in a powerful way.
Keep up your chain of content and the daily grind will help to make you better with time.
