A recent study by Ipsos revealed that 62% of all internet users now use social media.  Although 62% penetration is impressive, many people forget that email is still the giant in the room and email is used by 85% of all internet users.

The only medium that eclipses email is search engines, and although the Ipsos study does not with 12.02 billion Google searches in December 2011 the US alone I think it’s safe to say that nearly all internet users use a search engine and most people use Google.

Marketers should take these stats to heart and invest their effort accordingly.

If you want to build a successful online business your life will be much easier if you create Google friendly content, leverage the popularity of email, and syndicate your content to the major social media channels.

1. Content Marketing is Powerful

At the end of the day the statement Bill Gates made in the nineties that content is king still rings true.

If you create quality content it will rise in the ranks of Google, and get shared far and wide via email and social media.

A solid success philosophy is in the truth that can be applied to the content you create and share is that the more selfless and helpful you are to others the more others will want to help you.

2. The Money is in The List

A common saying within the internet marketing realm is that the money is in the list.

From my experience this statement is true, since it is the lists of contacts that you build that you are able to get attention for anything you are doing.

Although there are currently more social media sites than ever on which to build lists of contacts, the most powerful list you can build is an email list.

Getting email subscribers is more important than RSS subscribers.  

Not everyone checks their RSS on a regular basis, but most people do check their email regularly.

Social Media channels are getting more noisy than ever, and it is hard to capture attention and cut through the noise.

Once you start to build an email list it won’t take very long to notice that it is a very powerful medium for promoting anything at all; be it your latest content, post or product.

3. Auto-Responders are Awesome

Due to the trust I build with my auto-responder if I ever come across an awesome product that I want to promote as an affiliate, or create a product of my own, I am able to make several sales at once.

Since I have proven to my list that the content I share for free is awesome they trust that the products I promote will be even better.

When someone signs up to my list they also subscribe to a series of the emails containing exclusive awesome content that only my subscribers get.  With the content in my auto-responder I build trust with my subscribers automatically with over 20 emails that I have already written.

My Aweber email marketing autoresponder is currently the greatest expense in my online business (the price goes up as you get more subscribers), but I don’t mind paying the bill at all because it is also the service that creates the greatest amount of profit.

4. Social Media is Becoming More Important

Every day I get traffic to my websites, and new subscribers on my email list from my social media activity.

With networking, content, and communication you can reach out to many people and build a strong base for your business.

Since your email list is the backbone of your business try to promote it on social media whenever possible.

Building your List with Twitter

From my experience Twitter is the most powerful website for building both a massive network, and my email list.

I wrote a post that contains over 50 tips for getting more followers, but that is only one half of the equation.

The other half of a powerful Twitter presence is sharing compelling content, connecting with people in your niche, and communicating with your audience and building relationships on a regular basis.

5. Pillar Content is a Money Magnet

Pillar content is a piece of compelling content that causes people to share your blog and sign up for your email list.

If you create a post, a video, or anything that goes above and beyond to deliver massive value to your audience then this will help your blog stand out from the crowd and show your audience that you are an awesome source of information who they should stay in contact with.

Having pillar content is essential if you want to build a list and a business online.

When pillar content is given in exchange for an email address the content is called a lead magnet. money-magnet

    Its like you read my thoughts! You seem to grasp so much about this, such as you wrote the e-book in it or something. I believe that you simply can do with some percent to pressure the message home a bit, but other than that, this is fantastic blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.
